“A Sound Life” ’20 doc indie-crowdfunder

I make short documentaries about self-taught learners who’ve followed an interest to success — charismatic people who have become experts in their field. Whatever the subject is that drew them in, that’s what I seek to learn more about. Once the film is made, I try to give it exposure by submitting it to film festivals and distributing it to nonprofits, ultimately to inspire viewers to pursue their own interests.

My current documentary is “A Sound Life”. It’s scheduled for release in ’20.

About the Film

Richard Beggs followed his interest in painting, classical music, and music recording, to work in sound for film. He received an Academy Award on his very first film, “Apocalypse Now.” As retirement looms, Richard shares insights from 40 years of experience of creating motion picture soundtracks. Among his unique contributions are his choice, throughout his career, to give women a gateway into a male-dominated field. A good film soundtrack is critical to a successful film experience, but few people know what goes into its creation. “A Sound Life” includes behind-the-scenes footage and candid interviews with award-winning film professionals such as Sofia Coppola, Barry Levinson, Walter Murch, Gary Rydstrom, Randy Thom, Lora Hirschberg, and Skip Lievsay who add to California’s rich film history about post-production sound for film.

What’s Next

With production nearing completion, I’m currently accepting private and corporate donations to subsidize post production costs including attorney’s fees, music licensing costs, sound-editing honorarium, tests screenings, DCP copies, and festival entries.

Ultimately, my film is intended to be screened, followed by discussion questions, at non-profits, particularly those with media programs. Art museums needing intellectual content for donors and would benefit from screenings. Public libraries could make this unknown aspect of  filmmaking finally available to the public.

I’m looking forward to sharing the film history I’ve gathered from Richard Beggs, and his esteemed directors and colleagues. Their masterful interpretation of post sound work for film has never been explored like this before.

Ultimately my hope is that “A Sound Life” will inspire women and people of color to seek work in this currently white-dominated male film profession.
